Sudan
Sudan (officially the Republic of Sudan) (Arabic: as-Sūdān) is the largest country in Africa and tenth largest country in the world by area. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, Kenya and Uganda to the southeast, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. The country’s name derives from the Arabic Bilad-al-sudan, literally “land of the blackened.”
According to estimates, Sudan is predominantly Muslim. Approximately 70% of the population adheres to Islam, while approximately 20-25% of the population subscribe to animist or indigenous beliefs, and about 5-10% of the population (concentrated in the south) is Christian. Sudan’s largest Christian denominations are the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church of the Sudan, the Presbyterian Church in the Sudan and the Coptic Orthodox Church.Oil production and revenues are rising.
